Poorly Fiat 2.8 JTD........HELP!

Post by sweepea on Mon 22 Aug 2016 - 22:08

Hi all, Our '02 Ducato 2.8 JTD is poorly and I wonder if anyone has had the same 'fault ' and can be of some help or offer advise please?

The M.H. is fine on the straight and level. Starts and ticks over fine too, but hit an incline and the power drops and some black smoke comes from the exhaust. It is not using oil and there is no burnt oil smell (piston rings).

It has had two independent diagnostic checks and neither party can find anything wrong with the diesel fuel system.

I put a bottle of Wynns cleaner in the fuel tank but this made no difference. I also replaced the air filter.......

Any thoughts chaps?

We'll still be able to get to Marbury Park this coming w/end. Perhaps we can go for a world record for the amount of blokes under the bonnet of a Roller Team M.H.!!! scratch

Cheers.......

Has it got an intercooler on it? check round the pipe clips for splitting

If it's intercooled my guess is that's whats gone if it isn't one of the pipes thats split (usually split round the clamps), has all the right symptoms, do you have a radiator repair place near you or a turbo specialist? these usually have facilities to pressure test an intercooler

.....as far as I can see there is no intercooler, and no mention of one in the hand book.

All sounds a bit vague I know, but modern engines and me don't mix- especially diesels!

Ken, I'll have a look around locally, but I doubt I will have time to get anything sorted before the w/end.

Thanks in advance boys for any help/advice that might be forthcoming at Marbury.

Cheers......

Black Smoke - this is the most common one and is really just an imbalance in the air to fuel ratio - too much fuel to not enough air. This means either too much fuel is being added to the mix or there's not enough oxygen being supplied to burn the fuel. The black smoke is full of particulates that are basically large diesel particles that normally would be burned as fuel. Any way you look at it, a diesel truck emitting black smoke is not going to be getting the optimal fuel mileage it should be getting.
Most common causes of black smoke are faulty injectors, a faulty injector pump, a bad air filter (causing not enough oxygen to be supplied), a bad EGR valve (causing the valves to clog) or even a bad turbocharger. Some of these are easy fixes.

I'll bet it's that what's gone, not easy to diagnose in a field though Sad
Have you looked for any damage to the fins? checked the rubber hoses and couplings for splitting?
Best way is to have it pressure tested, not sure how accessible it will be on a 3.5 tonner but on HGV's I used to use a welding torch, light it with a long yellow flame and waft it in front of the intercooler, there's that much pressure in there that it would blow the flame when you past it over any hole, only needs a pin prick for them to lose power, another option it to disable the fan, wet your hand and feel for the leak
