Hi

Has anyone got recommendations on which route to cross the Pyrenees?

We're driving through France from the tunnel in a couple of weeks heading for Camping Pena Montanesa near Ainsa.  (Originally was going tomorrow - Sunday - from Portsmouth to Bilbao then onto the campsite but things have unexpectedly changed at the last minute!)

We've recently changed our motorhome and now have a 2008 Fiat Ducato 2.3L Lunar Goldstar 620 a bit over 7m long including bike rack.  It has a bit more power than our 2L Autotrail but we have no experience of routes over the Pyrenees.

We've been looking at the route from near Toulouse to Ainsa. The D173 on the French side, through tunnel de Bielsa and the A138 on the Spanish side.

or

from near Pau (Oloron Ste-Marie) on the N134 French side, through the Somport tunnel, then the N330 down to Jaca in Spain then across to Ainsa.

or

would it be easier coming down the west coast of France into Spain and crossing over west to East via Pamplona?

Are these routes suitable for a 7m+ 3500kg motorhome? Or anyone got other suggestions?

Don't like steep drops down on the side of the road!!

Also what weather can we expect over the Pyrenees at this time of year, will there be any problems with snow?

Hope someone can help please

Mark & Linda

Done this route many times, last time with 3 other motor-hoamers but had to use the Somport tunnel as Col du Somport was still closed with snow, (watch your speed and distance in the tunnel they have cameras)

The most spectacular route from Oloron Ste-Marie is via the N920/N934 over the Col Du Pourtalet stunning scenery then A136 and N260A for Ainsa. Check weather/road conditions before attempting this route, but if it is open you will have the trip of a lifetime, loads of free parking and great restaurants

Yes I would be inclined to go over the Col Du Pourtalet if you can or use the somport tunnel as you only have a 2 hour journey from the other side.
Keep us posted on your trip & hope you have a great one  cheers
